The Other Surge: The Uninsured

The Census Bureau reports that more than two million Americans joined the ranks of the uninsured last year, whose ranks reached nearly 47 million. There were over 8.6 million uninsured children, a 600,000 increase over 2005. All the more reason to pass S-CHIP . . . without the unnecessary earmarks.

And there will be more folks unisured as time goes on. Some of the writers on my website, http://www.envirofreak.com , talk of making immediate costly changes in the way people live and travel in order to save the environemnt. But at what cost? The average American middle class wage earner is already tapped out with the phone bill, cost of goods, and rent. Too many of them do not realize that they can do with less, but that is another story.

I think there are too many activists trying to grab too much attention at one time. Health care, the environment, politics - they all need to be fixed, and a plan needs to be put in place that the middle class can amortize the payments on. We also all have to re-think our priorities.
