Lilly Disclosure Begets Investigation

Here's a story we should see in abundance if Congress passes the Physician Payments Sunshine Act, which is in the House and Senate versions of health care reform legislation.

The Boston Globe reports that two physicians at Boston University-affiliated Boston Medical Center are under investigation for violating university rules that prohibit the drug industry from writing industry-funded lectures delivered by faculty members. A hospital spokesman at first told reporter Liz Kowalczyk that the payments by Eli Lilly -- running into the tens of thousands of dollars -- passed muster because the  doctors, neurologist Brian McGeeney and endocrinologist Elliot Sternthal, wrote their own presentations. But when the company confirmed that it provided slides and outlines for the talks, a university spokesman said the provost was investigating the matter.

The story was made possible by the fact that Lilly is one of the first companies to voluntarily list physician payments on its website. Enterprising reporters in other parts of the country should take note, especially as more companies move to put their disclosures online.
